Andinia schizopogon Culture

Andinia schizopogon is a miniature, cool to cold growing epiphyte that is native to Ecuador. It is found in wet, cloud forests at elevations of 2000 to 3000 meters. The plant has a creeping rhizome and erect ramicauls with single, apical, ovate leaves.

  • Light: Prefers shady conditions. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: Cool to cold growing conditions are essential, with a temperature range of 10-18°C (50-65°F) during the day and 7-13°C (45-55°F) at night.
  • Humidity: High humidity, between 70-80%, is crucial. 
  • Watering: Keep the roots consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings is recommended to prevent root rot.

  • Floral Characteristics: This orchid produces a single, small, non-resupinate flower on a short inflorescence. The flower is yellow and has a distinctive fringed lip and sepals, giving it a somewhat "hairy" or "shaggy" appearance. The bloom is delicate and often hidden within the foliage.
