Philodendron atabapoense

Philodendron atabapoense

This is a highly desirable climbing Aroid is prized for its striking, elongated, spear-shaped leaves. The main ornamental feature is the beautiful color contrast: a dark green top surface and a deep reddish-burgundy or maroon underside.

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light to achieve the deepest leaf coloration and compact growth. Low light will cause the colors to dull and the plant to become leggy.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, tropical conditions, ideally in the range of 65-85°F (18-29°C). It must be protected from cold and temperatures dropping below 60°F (16°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity is appreciated, with 60% or higher being beneficial for healthy, large leaf development. Use a humidifier or group the plant with others to increase ambient moisture.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, allowing the top 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the soil to dry out between applications. Use a loose, chunky, and well-draining mix to ensure the roots do not sit in soggy soil.

Additional Notes

The striking contrast between the two leaf surfaces makes it a focal point in any collection. The plant is considered toxic if ingested.
