More information

Philodendron rugosum

Philodendron rugosum

This is a highly sought-after terrestrial aroid native to Ecuador, prized for its unique, deeply textured (rugose) leaves. Its stiff, thick foliage has a distinctive, leathery feel, which is the source of its name.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Strong, filtered light encourages the best growth and maintains the deep texture of the foliage. Avoid direct sun.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, consistent temperatures, ideally between 68-86°F (20-30°C). It is sensitive to cold and must be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Humidity: Benefits from medium to high humidity, ideally above 60%. Increasing ambient moisture with a humidifier or a pebble tray is recommended for optimal foliage health.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 50% of the soil feels dry. Use a well-draining substrate and avoid overwatering, as the plant is susceptible to root rot.

Additional Notes

This is a slow-growing, upright collector's plant prized for its distinctive textured foliage and low-maintenance requirements. Toxic if ingested—keep away from children and pets.
