Philodendron werneri

Philodendron werneri

A dramatic and statuesque tropical aroid that commands attention with its exceptionally large, broadly cordate leaves in deep green with a subtle blue-gray sheen on the upper surface and contrasting reddish-brown venation visible on the underside. The smooth, matte texture and impressive leaf size make it one of the most architecturally bold species-type Philodendrons available for indoor cultivation.

  • Light: Bright indirect light; tolerates moderate shade but produces its most impressive, large foliage in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sun, which can dull the distinctive leaf coloration.
  • Temperature: Warm-growing; thrives between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (65–85%), consistent with its tropical rainforest origins. A humidifier or enclosed growing space is recommended to support large leaf development.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist but well-drained. Allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings; avoid waterlogging.
  • Growth Habit: Vining and climbing; benefits from a sturdy moss pole or support structure to encourage the development of its characteristically large leaves as it matures.

Additional Notes:

Foliage is the highlight: leaves are very large, broadly heart-shaped, smooth and matte with a deep green to blue-gray upper surface and prominent reddish-brown venation on the reverse. A slow to moderate grower that rewards patience with truly impressive, architectural foliage.
