Stenospermation spruceanum

Stenospermation spruceanum

Stenospermation spruceanum is an epiphytic aroid native to the wet tropical forests of Central and South America. It is appreciated by collectors for its attractive, glossy, oblong-elliptic leaves and unique inflorescence.

  • Light: Medium to low light. Provide filtered light, mimicking the forest understory. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Warm to intermediate conditions. Maintain temperatures of 68-86°F (20-30°C) year-round, and protect it from temperatures below ().
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential. Maintain a relative humidity of 60% or higher. A humidifier or a closed growing environment is often necessary.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top of the potting mix feels dry to the touch. As a naturally epiphytic plant, it requires an open, well-draining mix to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

The inflorescence consists of a central spike, or spadix, subtended by a modified leaf, the spathe. The spathe is typically white and opens broadly when the flower is mature.
