Philodendron pterotum Andes

Philodendron pterotum Andes

This is a beautiful climbing aroid and a regional variation of Philodendron pterotum. Native to wet tropical regions of Central and South America, the 'Andes' variety is prized by collectors for its potentially distinct characteristics.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is necessary for healthy, vigorous growth. Exposure to harsh, direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf burn.
  • Temperature: This plant thrives in average to warm household temperatures. The ideal range to maintain is: 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect it from cold drafts.
  • Humidity: High humidity is ideal, replicating its native rainforest environment. Can tolerate average indoor humidity.
  • Watering: Water consistently, allowing the top layer of the well-draining potting mix to dry out completely before watering thoroughly again. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

The species is known for its uniquely "winged" leaves, which are typically glossy, elongated, and heart-shaped. It requires a support structure like a moss pole to climb.
