Anguloa virginalis

Anguloa virginalis Culture

Anguloa virginalis, commonly known as the "cradle orchid" or "tulip orchid," is a medium to large-sized terrestrial orchid. It is found on humid mountain slopes at elevations between 1200 and 2400 meters. The plant is semi-deciduous, losing its leaves during the dry season.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Filtered sunlight is ideal, as excessive direct exposure can damage its leaves. It naturally grows under the shade of trees.
  • Temperature: This species thrives in cool to moderate growing conditions, with daytime temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F) and cooler night temperatures between 10-15°C (50-59°F).
  • Humidity: High humidity, between 50-70%, is crucial, especially during the active growing season.
  • Watering: Water heavily during the active growth period (spring and summer), allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. When the plant loses its leaves, watering should be reduced significantly to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

  • Floral Characteristics: This orchid produces a single, large, waxy, tulip-shaped flower on an erect spike. The blooms are typically white to creamy-white and have a sweet, cinnamon-like fragrance. The shape of the flowers, with the sepals and petals curved inward, gives it the appearance of a cradle, hence its common name.
