Anthurium draconopterum

Anthurium draconopterum

A rare and architecturally striking species from Ecuador, first described by Sodiro in 1905. The name draconopterum — meaning "dragon wing" — perfectly captures the deeply trilobate leaf form: a pronounced central lobe flanked by two broad, wing-like lateral lobes that give each leaf an unmistakable, sculptural silhouette. Offered at blooming size.

  • Light: Bright indirect light; avoid direct sun. Thrives near an east- or north-facing window, or under grow lights.
  • Temperature: Intermediate-warm growing — 65°F–82°F (18°C–28°C). Protect from temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
  • Humidity: 70–90%. Use a humidifier or high-humidity enclosure for best results. Avoid dry air from heating or AC vents.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of the substrate feels dry. Use a well-draining, chunky aroid mix. Never let roots sit in standing water.
  • Growth Habit: Upright with a robust, woody caudex that develops with age. Benefits from a sturdy moss pole or totem as it matures.

Additional Notes:

Leaves are glossy dark green with prominent parallel lateral venation across all three lobes. The woody caudex becomes an ornamental feature in itself as the plant matures. At blooming size, inflorescences emerge with a small green spathe and a dark purple spadix. Minor variation between individuals is expected.
