Anthurium vanderknaapii

Anthurium vanderknaapii

Native to Ecuador, this distinctive species produces a vivid red spathe paired with an upright orange spadix. Its contrasting inflorescences add a bright accent to a tropical plant collection.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light near an east-facing window or beneath filtered greenhouse shade. Protect from strong midday sun.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing, ideally 65–82°F (18–28°C). Avoid cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity with gentle air circulation.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer of the medium begins to dry. Keep the root zone lightly moist but never saturated, and allow excess water to drain freely.
  • Growth Habit: Upright to climbing, developing an elongated stem as it matures. Provide a moss pole or similar support for aerial roots and stable vertical growth.

Additional Notes:

Elongated, narrow green leaves have a prominent pale midrib and gently arching blades. Use an airy mix of orchid bark, perlite, and moisture-retentive material, keeping the stem base above the medium to reduce the risk of rot.
