Begonia Ferox

Begonia Ferox

One of the most dramatic and unusual begonias in cultivation, this rare Chinese species is instantly recognizable by its rounded, deeply textured leaves covered in striking dark, cone-shaped bullae — giving the foliage an almost prehistoric, armored appearance. A true collector's gem that commands attention in any terrarium or high-humidity display.

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light; avoid direct sun, which can fade the distinctive dark bullae and scorch the leaves. Thrives under grow lights in a terrarium setup.
  • Temperature: Intermediate growing. 60–75°F (15–24°C); protect from temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Prefers stable, mild conditions without sudden fluctuations.
  • Humidity: 70–90%; high humidity is essential to maintain the distinctive leaf texture and prevent crisping of the bullae. A terrarium or enclosed growing environment is ideal.
  • Watering: Keep substrate evenly moist but never waterlogged; excellent drainage is critical. Avoid wetting the leaves directly to prevent rot on the bullae.

Additional Notes:

Foliage is rounded with a scalloped margin, displaying dense, dark cone-shaped protuberances across the entire leaf surface — a unique adaptation that makes this species unmistakable. Plant in a well-draining mix of fine bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Fertilize lightly every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Best suited for terrarium culture due to its high humidity requirements.
