Bulbophyllum fascinator

This is a small-sized, epiphytic species found in primary montane forests from sea level up to 1000 meters across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines. It is prized for its spectacular inflorescence.

  • Light: It requires bright, filtered or indirect light (moderate). It should be grown with sufficient light but always protected from direct, intense sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: It is a warm-to-intermediate growing orchid, thriving in warm, humid conditions. For optimal growth, maintain daytime temperatures in the range of 68-86°F (20-30°C).
  • Humidity: It needs high and consistent humidity, ideally maintained in the range of 60% to 90% or higher, to mimic its natural rainforest habitat.
  • Watering: It requires frequent and copious watering to keep the potting medium perpetually moist, never allowing it to dry out completely. Water liberally using a well-draining, moisture-retentive medium like tree fern fiber or sphagnum moss.

Additional Notes

This species is highly valued for its fascinating bloom, featuring flowers up to 9 inches (15 to 20 cm) long due to their elongated lateral sepals. It is best grown in slatted wooden baskets with tree fern fiber or a similar medium.
