More information

Cattleya dowiana

Cattleya dowiana

This medium-sized, epiphytic orchid is native to the rainforests of Costa Rica and Colombia. Highly valued in breeding for creating dark Cattleya hybrids, it is a rewarding species, though considered moderately challenging to grow successfully.

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun to prevent leaf burn. Leaves should be light green; dark green indicates insufficient light and may hinder blooming.
  • Temperature: Prefers intermediate to warm temperatures. A night drop of 10-15°F (6-8°C) is beneficial for flowering. Maintain a general range of 68-86°F (20-30°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity (60-80%) is ideal. Excellent air circulation is mandatory, especially under high humidity, to prevent diseases.
  • Watering: Allow the potting mix (e.g., bark) to dry slightly between thorough waterings. Water more frequently during active growth and significantly reduce watering during the winter rest period.

Additional Notes

The Cattleya dowiana produces very showy and highly fragrant flowers. The blooms last two to three weeks and have a captivating, complex scent of lemon, spice, and vanilla.
