Columnea karstenianum

Columnea karstenianum

A striking gesneriad from South American rainforests, distinguished by its deeply patterned foliage — dark green leaves with bold burgundy venation and vivid red-tipped new growth that makes it as ornamental as any flowering plant.

  • Light: Bright indirect light. Performs well near an east or north-facing window. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can fade the dramatic leaf patterning.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing. Thrives between 60–80°F (15–27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: 60–80%. High humidity enhances both foliage color and overall vigor. A humidifier or pebble tray is recommended indoors.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of substrate is dry. Avoid waterlogging — well-draining, airy mix is key. Consistent moisture without saturation is ideal.
  • Growth Habit: Trailing to semi-upright — stems elongate and can cascade attractively from a hanging basket or be trained along a support.

Additional Notes:

Foliage is elliptic with a deep green base heavily marked by dark burgundy veins and reddish margins; emerging tips show vivid crimson coloration. Under good conditions, it produces small tubular yellow flowers nestled at the leaf axils. A rewarding species for collectors who appreciate ornamental foliage as much as blooms.
