Coryanthes hunteriana

Coryanthes hunteriana

A remarkable Bucket Orchid from South American rainforests, producing large, sculptural flowers in soft creamy yellow with a distinctive bucket-shaped lip and an elegantly arched hood — one of the most architecturally complex flowers in the orchid family, with a pollination mechanism unlike any other plant.

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun. Best grown in a humid greenhouse with filtered light and strong air movement.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing; thrives between 60–82°F (15–28°C). Avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C) and cold drafts.
  • Humidity: Very high humidity required, ideally 70–90%. Consistent moisture in the air is essential for healthy growth and flowering.
  • Watering: Water frequently and generously; roots must never dry out completely. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent rot despite the high moisture needs.

Additional Notes:

Must be grown in open wooden baskets or slatted containers, as flower spikes emerge downward from the pseudobulb base. Use a very coarse mix of large bark, charcoal, and perlite to ensure maximum drainage and aeration.
