Coryanthes verrucolineata

One of the most extraordinary orchids in cultivation, known as the Bucket Orchid — producing pendulous spikes of large, architecturally complex flowers in vivid yellow-orange with a deep burgundy-red hood and a bucket-shaped lip, part of a fascinating pollination mechanism unique to the genus.

• Light: Moderate to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun. Performs best in a humid greenhouse with filtered light and strong air circulation.
• Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing; thrives between 60–82°F (15–28°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
• Humidity: Very high humidity required, ideally 70–90%. Consistent moisture in the air is critical — this species naturally grows in humid lowland and foothill forests.
• Watering: Water frequently and generously; roots must never dry out completely. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent rot despite the high moisture requirements.

Additional Notes:

Must be grown in open baskets or slatted wooden containers, as flower spikes emerge downward from the base of pseudobulbs. Use a coarse, fast-draining mix of large bark chunks, charcoal, and perlite. Coryanthes are best suited for experienced growers with a warm, humid greenhouse environment.
