Dendrobium cariniferum

Dendrobium cariniferum

Native to humid forests from the eastern Himalayan region through mainland Southeast Asia, this small epiphytic orchid produces spring flowers with a tangerine-like fragrance. Creamy-white blooms feature a richly orange throat and a delicately fringed lip.

  • Light: Bright, filtered light with gentle morning sun. An east-facing window or lightly shaded greenhouse position is suitable; protect from harsh midday sun.
  • Temperature: Intermediate-growing, with a cooler winter rest; aim for growing-season days of 70–82°F (21–28°C) and nights of 55–65°F (13–18°C). Cooler winter nights around 50–55°F (10–13°C) are suitable; protect from frost.
  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% during active growth with steady air circulation. Maintain ventilation during the cooler resting season.
  • Watering: Water generously during active growth, allowing an airy mix to begin drying between waterings. After canes mature, reduce watering through winter and provide a distinctly dry rest of about one month without fertilizer. Give occasional light moisture if canes begin to shrivel excessively, then resume regular watering as new growth and roots develop.

Additional Notes:

Thick canes carry several broad green leaves, with short flower clusters appearing near their upper portions. Use a snug pot with an open bark-based mix, and retain healthy mature canes for future flowering. Repot when new roots emerge and fertilize lightly during the growing season.
