Dendrobium constrictum

Dendrobium constrictum

Native to humid forests of New Guinea and nearby western Pacific islands, this small epiphytic species produces densely packed clusters of delicate flowers. Its short floral spikes offer an intricate display suited to growers who enjoy compact, warm-growing orchids.

  • Light: Bright, filtered light in a shaded greenhouse or near an east-facing window. Protect from strong midday sun.
  • Temperature: Warm-growing; aim for days of 75–85°F (24–29°C) and nights of 62–68°F (17–20°C). Avoid prolonged exposure to cold conditions.
  • Humidity: Aim for 70–85% with gentle, continuous air circulation, especially when grown mounted.
  • Watering: Keep roots evenly moist during active growth while ensuring excellent drainage. Allow the medium to approach dryness without remaining dry for extended periods. Reduce frequency when growth slows, but avoid a prolonged dry winter rest.

Additional Notes:

Glossy, strap-shaped leaves accompany clustered canes, while tiny pale green flowers form dense heads, typically in summer and fall. Grow in a small pot with an airy orchid mix or on a mount if frequent watering is possible. Retain healthy older canes and repot as new roots begin to grow.
