Koellensteinia portillae

Koellensteinia portillae

A rare and little-known species orchid from Ecuador, producing waxy, cupped flowers in creamy white with bold dark magenta-purple striping on the petals and lip — an unusual and elegant find for collectors of South American species.

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun. Performs well under filtered greenhouse light or bright indoor conditions.
  • Temperature: Intermediate-growing; thrives between 55–75°F (13–24°C). Appreciates a slight temperature drop at night to encourage blooming.
  • Humidity: High humidity preferred, ideally 60–80%. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues.
  • Watering: Water regularly during active growth; allow a brief drying period between waterings. Reduce slightly after pseudobulbs mature. Excellent drainage is essential.

Additional Notes:

Best grown in small clay or plastic pots with a well-draining mix of fine bark and perlite. Repot every 2 years or when the medium begins to break down.
