More information

Masdevallia filaria

Masdevallia filaria

This remarkable species features delicate flowers with thread-like sepal tails that extend gracefully from the bloom, creating an ethereal appearance when grown in cool, humid conditions with proper air circulation.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50-70% shade cloth. Avoid direct sun which can burn foliage.
  • Temperature: Cool grower. Daytime 59-72°F (15-22°C), nighttime 50-59°F (10-15°C). Benefits from 10-15°F day-night differential.
  • Humidity: 70-85% with excellent air movement. Use humidity trays, humidifiers, or terrarium setups.
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist year-round. Mounted plants require daily watering, potted specimens every 2-3 days. Reduce slightly in winter.

Additional Notes

Native to Ecuador at 2,200-3,200 meters elevation. The species name "filaria" refers to the thread-like sepal tails. Thrives mounted on tree fern or cork bark, or potted in fine bark mix with sphagnum moss.
