Masdevallia virgo-cuencae

Masdevallia virgo-cuencae

A stunning cool-growing orchid endemic to Ecuador, prized for its dramatic, long-tailed flowers in creamy yellow-green flushed with deep burgundy-purple, carried simultaneously on multiple upright stems for a spectacular display.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light — an east-facing window or shaded south/west exposure works well. Avoid direct sun.
  • Temperature: Cool-growing — 48–63°F (9–17°C) nights, with days not exceeding 72°F (22°C). Consistent cool temperatures are critical for long-term health and blooming.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 75–90% is essential. Use a cool-mist humidifier, humidity tray, or grow in a cool greenhouse.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist at all times; never allow it to dry out. Water frequently with soft or rainwater and ensure excellent drainage.

Additional Notes:

Foliage is compact and strap-like, producing multiple erect inflorescences simultaneously — each bearing a single flower with elongated, whip-like tails that add dramatic movement. Best grown in a small pot with fine, moisture-retentive media or mounted with frequent misting.
