More information

Philodendron bicolor

Philodendron bicolor

This tropical species, native to South America, is known for its distinctive two-toned coloration as implied by its name. It is typically characterized by large, glossy, dark green leaves with a lighter green or sometimes reddish-pink underside (abaxial surface).

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, which encourages robust growth and the deepest coloration. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, consistent indoor temperatures, ideally between 68-86°F (20-30°C). Protect the plant from cold temperatures, especially below 50°F (10°C).
  • Humidity: Benefits from medium to high humidity, ideally above 60%. Using a humidifier or placing the pot near a tray of water and pebbles will help maintain the health and shine of the foliage.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 50% of the potting mix feels dry to the touch. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water retention and potential root rot.

Additional Notes

Philodendron bicolor is a low-maintenance climbing plant that thrives with vertical support, encouraging impressive leaf development. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic if ingested—keep away from children and pets.
