Philodendron squamiferum

Philodendron squamiferum

The Philodendron squamiferum is a striking climbing aroid easily recognized by its unique, bright red, fuzzy hairs covering the petioles (leaf stems), a trait that gives it the nickname "Red Bristle Philodendron." Its large, dark green leaves develop deep lobes as the plant matures.

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light. Too little light slows growth and hinders maturity; direct sun can scorch the glossy leaves.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, tropical conditions, ideally between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid exposing it to cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, around 60% or more, to prevent leaf edges from browning. It benefits greatly from a humidifier or being grouped with other plants.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1/4th (25%) of the potting mix is dry to the touch. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix, as this plant is highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered.

Additional Notes

Providing a moss pole for climbing is essential for this species to produce its mature, iconic leaf shape. As with all Philodendrons, it is toxic if ingested.
