Phragmipedium Gigi Portilla

Phragmipedium Gigi Portilla

This is a newer hybrid, resulting from the cross of Phrag. Carol Kanzer Phrag. kovachii. This orchid combines the massive size and intense color saturation of P. kovachii with the robust growth habit of its other ancestors. It is a stunning, sequential bloomer that requires high moisture.

  • Light: Medium to bright, indirect light. Strong filtered light is needed for blooming, but prevent scorching by avoiding harsh midday sun.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Maintain daytime temperatures of 65-80°F (18-27°C) and night temperatures that drop to 55-65°F (13-18°C).
  • Humidity: High (70-80%). High ambient moisture is essential. Good air circulation is necessary.
  • Watering: This orchid must be kept consistently moist to wet; do not let the roots dry out. Use only pure water (rain, distilled, or RO) and can be grown with the pot sitting in a shallow saucer of water.

Additional Notes

It is a sequential bloomer, meaning one flower fades as the next one opens on the same spike, extending the bloom period.
