More information

Sobralia gentryi

Sobralia gentryi

Sobralia gentryi is a cool-to-warm growing orchid, often terrestrial or lithophytic, known for its upright, leafy, reed-like stems. It is highly valued for its elegant, intricate flowers.

  • Light: It needs partial shade or bright, indirect light. Proper, diffused light encourages blooming while protecting the pleated leaves from scorching.
  • Temperature: This species thrives in intermediate conditions, ideally between 60-80°F (16-27°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity, between 60% and 80%, is essential for healthy, non-crisping foliage. Ensure constant, gentle air movement to prevent disease in high-moisture settings.
  • Watering: Water liberally and often since this orchid requires consistent moisture and must never fully dry out. Use a well-draining media and superior pot drainage to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

The plant produces showy, fragrant, terminal flowers up to 3" [7.5 cm]. The flower tonality is often variable. Individual blooms are short-lived, but they often appear in succession, extending the overall period of bloom.
