More information

Stanhopea costaricensis

Stanhopea costaricensis

A spectacular and exotic orchid from Central American cloud forests, producing pendulous spikes of large, waxy flowers in golden yellow densely spotted with dark maroon-brown, with a dramatically sculptured lip and prominent dark eye spots — one of the most visually striking species in the genus.

  • Light: Bright indirect light; tolerates some morning sun. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the large pleated leaves.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing; thrives between 58–82°F (14–28°C). Tolerates brief temperature drops but prefers stable warmth.
  • Humidity: High humidity preferred, ideally 60–80%. Good air movement is essential to keep the foliage healthy.
  • Watering: Water freely during active growth; reduce slightly in winter. Never allow the roots to dry out completely. Excellent drainage is critical.

Additional Notes:

Stanhopeas must be grown in open baskets or slatted containers, as flower spikes emerge downward through the potting medium. Flowers are intensely fragrant and short-lived (2–3 days), but produced in abundance.
