Stanhopea impressa

Native to wet Andean forests of Ecuador and neighboring northern South America, this epiphytic orchid produces large, sculptural flowers on hanging spikes. Its dramatic downward flowering makes it especially suited to suspended basket displays.

• Light: Bright, filtered light in a shaded greenhouse or near an east-facing window. Protect the leaves from strong direct sunlight.
• Temperature: Intermediate-growing conditions are a practical starting point: days of 70–80°F (21–27°C) and nights of 58–65°F (14–18°C).
• Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity with steady, gentle air circulation.
• Watering: Water generously during active growth, keeping the medium evenly moist but well aerated. Reduce frequency when growth slows, without allowing prolonged dryness or severe pseudobulb shriveling.

Additional Notes:

Ribbed pseudobulbs each carry a broad, pleated leaf. Use an open hanging basket with a loose, moisture-retentive lining so flower spikes can emerge through the bottom unobstructed. Leave clear space beneath the basket and avoid disturbing developing spikes during repotting.
