Stenospermation spruceanum is an epiphytic aroid native to the wet tropical forests of Central and South America. It is appreciated by collectors for its attractive, glossy, oblong-elliptic leaves and unique inflorescence.
-
Light: Medium to low light. Provide filtered light, mimicking the forest understory. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Temperature: Warm to intermediate conditions. Maintain temperatures of 68-86°F (20-30°C) year-round, and protect it from temperatures below 60∘F (16∘C).
-
Humidity: High humidity is essential. Maintain a relative humidity of 60% or higher. A humidifier or a closed growing environment is often necessary.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top of the potting mix feels dry to the touch. As a naturally epiphytic plant, it requires an open, well-draining mix to prevent root rot.
Additional Notes
The inflorescence consists of a central spike, or spadix, subtended by a modified leaf, the spathe. The spathe is typically white and opens broadly when the flower is mature.
