Philodendron melanochrysum (seedling)

Philodendron melanochrysum (seedling)

Philodendron melanochrysum, commonly known as the Black Gold Philodendron, is a breathtaking climbing aroid celebrated for its dramatic transformation as it matures. This seedling represents the beginning of a spectacular journey toward developing some of the most coveted foliage in the plant world.

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can damage the delicate young leaves. East-facing windows with filtered light are ideal.
  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F) with consistent warmth. Avoid cold drafts and temperature fluctuations.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity levels of 60-80%. Use humidity trays, room humidifiers, or group with other tropical plants to maintain adequate moisture.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry. Use well-draining, aerated potting mix.
  • Maintenance: As a baby plant, repot according to growth until it reaches medium size. Provide adequate water, light, and fertilizer, but use less than for adult plants to avoid damaging development.

Additional Notes:

Young leaves start as small, heart-shaped green foliage that will gradually develop the signature deep, velvety texture and lustrous blackish-purple sheen as the plant matures. This climbing vine nature makes it ideal for trellises and totem poles.
