Lepanthes ribes f. xanthina

Lepanthes ribes f. xanthina

This miniature epiphyte is a yellow-flowered color variant of Lths. ribes, a species native to the cloud forests of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, growing at high altitudes (2500 to 3200 meters). It is a cold-growing plant prized for its intricate, colorful blooms.

  • Light: Requires low to medium, diffuse light. It must be protected from direct sun exposure.
  • Temperature: A cool to cold-growing species. It requires a cool, consistent environment with temperatures between 50-75°F (10-24°C). Cool night temperatures, ideally 50-55°F (10-13°C).
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity is critical, ideally 80% to 100%. Constant, gentle air movement is mandatory to prevent fungal infections.
  • Watering: Water frequently and constantly throughout the year; the root system must never dry out. It is best grown mounted or in small pots with sphagnum moss inside a terrarium for continuous moisture.

Additional Notes

This plant produces a succession of small, intricate, hair-covered flowers on short, thin inflorescences emerging from the base of the leaves. The xanthina form is specifically characterized by its yellow or yellow-orange flowers, which are highly detailed, numerous over time, and typically less than 1/4 inch (6 mm) across.
