Stanhopea reichenbachiana

A fascinating and fragrant orchid from the cloud forests of Ecuador, producing large, waxy, pure white to cream flowers with a gracefully twisted lip — borne on pendant inflorescences that emerge downward through the basket, earning Stanhopeas their nickname "upside-down orchids."

• Light: Bright, indirect light — a south or east-facing window with a sheer curtain is ideal. Good light promotes vigorous growth and blooming.
• Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing — 58–68°F (14–20°C) nights, with days up to 85°F (29°C). Tolerates a wide range with good air circulation.
• Humidity: High humidity of 65–80% is ideal. Ensure strong airflow to prevent fungal issues at the pseudobulb base.
• Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering slightly in winter to encourage blooming.

Additional Notes:

Must be grown in a slatted wooden basket or open-sided container to allow the pendant inflorescences to emerge downward and bloom freely. Flowers are intensely fragrant and short-lived, typically lasting 3–5 days. Foliage is large, pleated, and bold. A unique and rewarding species for growers with space for a statement plant.
