Hoya excavata

Hoya excavata

A distinctive and easy-growing Hoya species prized for its thick, succulent-like leaves with a uniquely excavated, concave surface texture that gives the foliage a crinkled, sculptural quality unlike most other Hoyas. A reliable viner that produces attractive umbels of star-shaped flowers in white to soft pink tones, making it a rewarding addition to any Hoya collection.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some morning direct sun. Adequate light encourages flowering. Avoid harsh midday sun.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm growing. 65–82°F (18–28°C); protect from temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: 50–70%; adaptable to average household humidity. Higher levels support more vigorous growth.
  • Watering: Allow the substrate to dry out almost completely between waterings; the thick leaves store moisture and the plant is susceptible to root rot if kept too wet. Reduce frequency in winter.

Additional Notes:

Foliage is thick and fleshy with a deeply textured, concave surface on trailing stems. Do not remove spent peduncles, as new blooms emerge from the same spurs each season. Grow in a well-draining mix (perlite, bark, and a small amount of potting mix). Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Suitable for hanging baskets or shelves.
